A plug-in is a program that works with your browser to enable it to display special kinds of files that it wasn't designed to handle. For example, most browsers cannot play RealAudio sound files by themselves, but they can if you install the RealAudio player plug-in. Future versions of browsers may support file types that now require plug-ins.
Installing a plug-in simply involves going to the web page of the people who make the plug-in and following the down-load and installation instructions. Many plug-ins are free.
RealAudio and RealVideo files
You can play these files using the free RealPlayer. You can also buy RealPlayer
Plus, a version with higher quality sound and video and other features. Internet
sound and video are young technologies. High Internet traffic can make sound
and video pause or otherwise degrade. Video is so data intensive that video
on the net often means a series of still images. Still pretty cool.
Download RealPlayer from the manufacturer.
Other files types and their plug-ings
